Why do people put plates underneath their heels?

Why do people put plates underneath their heels while they're squatting? People do this so they can get elevation on their heels. Instead of squatting on an even, level surface, the heel is propped up on an elevated item resulting in the feet and heel being angled as a whole.

This does two things:

1. It helps with poor ankle mobility.

When squatting, the heel tends to lift up off the ground. Putting plates or a flat item under your heel helps with this, as it puts the heels into that natural angled state. Additionally, having the plate there allows you to full apply pressure to your squat instead of using only the balls of your feet.

2. Increases engagement of the quads instead of the glutes and hamstrings.

This is good for those who struggle to fully engage their legs while squatting or those who want to prioritize building leg muscles. Elevating your heels when performing a squat will: increase squat depth and transfer force and emphasis to your quadriceps.

If you're seeking to incorporate more quad work into your squats or have trouble with ankle mobility, place a plate underneath your heels.
